Govt engaged with all stakeholders for peace in NWFP, says Hoti

* NWFP CM terms attack on Sufi Muhammad a ‘conspiracy’

PESHAWAR: The NWFP government concluded peace agreements with all stakeholders in insurgency-hit areas to establish government writ and peace in the region, NWFP Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti said on Tuesday.

"The agreements are signed after the government was assured that there will be no attacks on the security forces or government installations in the region," Hoti told German ambassador to Pakistan Dr Gunter Mulack in a meeting.

Conspiracy: Hoti said that some forces opposed the provincial government's efforts to bringing stability in the area, adding that an attack on Tehreek Nifaz Shariat-e-Muhammadi chief Maulana Sufi Mohammad was part a conspiracy.

He also said militancy in the Tribal Areas affected locals the most but the use of force to curb it led to an increased support for the militants, stressing the need to strengthen policing to curb militancy and establish government writ in the province.

“The police force should be provided with latest weapons and training to be effective in coping with militancy,” he said.

Hoti also said legal reforms in FATA could only be achieved after comprehensive administrative and political changes took place in the Tribal Areas.

He dispelled the impression that a parallel government and judicial system was established in Swat and Malakand following the peace agreements.

The chief minister also briefed the German envoy on improvements in the law and order situation in the province, and welcomed the assistance the German government has extended to the government and the people of the province.

Dr Mulack said that the German government would continue supporting NWFP’s newly elected government in its efforts to develop the province. app
